For Your Safety
Be Advised That You Are Ultimately Responsible For The Safety Of Yourself And Other People In Your Party.
Although Wenara Wana staff members are available to provide tourists with assistance, tourists ultimately assume all risks associated with entering into the Sacred Monkey Forest of Padangtegal. Obeying the following safety recommendations can reduce the likelihood that you or somebody in your party will be injured.
Stay On Paved Paths.
Monkeys can become aggressive if you wander into forested areas.
Watch Your Step.
Monkeys can become aggressive if they are stepped on. In addition, some areas within the Sacred Monkey Forest, especially near rivers and streams, can be very slippery.
Feeding The Monkeys Can Be Very Dangerous.
If you wish to assume the risks associated with feeding the monkeys, please DO NOT provide the monkeys with peanuts, chips, candy or other snack foods which can seriously harm the health of the monkeys.
Tourists Should Leave All Loose Items In Their Car or Bus.
If items have to be carried into the Sacred Monkey Forest, please make sure
that when they are not being utilized, they are secured (in something like a backpack) and whenever possible, kept out of the sight of the monkeys. In addition, all items (including backpacks) should never be left unattended.
Do Not Try To Retrieve Food or Objects Taken By Monkeys.
If a monkey tries to snatch an item from you, never threaten a monkey or
try to tug an object back from a monkey. Instead, let the monkey have the
object and seek out a Wenara Wana staff member (identified in green
uniforms) for assistance.
Keep A Close Watch On Children.
Children should never be allowed to approach the monkeys or carry loose
items (especially food). In addition, children should never be allowed to
play near river or stream areas.
Do Not Try To Touch The Monkeys.
Some monkeys, especially juveniles, may attempt to climb on you. If this occurs, just walk away slowly.
Do Not Stare Directly At A Monkey.
Prolonged eye contact is considered a threat to macaques.
Do Not Tease The Monkeys.
All macaques (including infants) will bite if provoked.
IF SOMEBODY IN YOUR PARTY IS BITTEN OR SCRATCHED BY A MONKEY, please...
Immediately seek out and ask a Wenara Wana staff member (identified in green uniforms) for assistance. Balinese long-tailed macaques are occasionally carriers of diseases like Hepatitis C. Obtaining even minor first aid (such as Wenara Wana staff members are trained to provide) can significantly reduce the likelihood that a person will contract a disease from a macaque bite or scratch. Wenara Wana staff members will also be happy to provide tourists with directions to local health care clinics. In addition, the Padangtegal Wenara Wana Foundation recommends that people who are bitten or scratched by a macaque consult with their personal physician as soon as possible.
