“Ngelawang” For The Celebration of Galungan and Kuningan

           Ngelawang is a tradition of the Balinese Hindus in Bali that held for celebrate Galungan and Kuningan , the victory of Dharma over Adharma. Ngelawang is an art performance that has a sacred meaning. Ngelawang has a broader meaning as a repellent reinforcement, its presenting barong dance which is a manifestation of an animal such as wild boar (Bangkal / bangkung), elephant, ox, tiger and Balinese people believe that barong is the manifestations of Shiva which is the soul of the barong.

            Ngelawang (from the word lawang which meaning is the door) is a term in the Balinese means perform that moving from one house or village to another. The performance of Ngelawang believed by the Balinese is to bring blessings, safety, tranquility and peace for Hindus. Performing ngelawang usually conducted in the morning, afternoon or night.

Location : Open Stage, Monkey Forest Ubud 

Performance by : The Youth of Padangtegal Village.

  1. Is this the same as performances we’ve seen around town over the past few days, where troupes of youngsters playing gamelan, and two in Borong costume, go from door to door? If not, how does this event differ? Thanks in advance for your response.

      Warmest greeting from Monkey Forest Ubud.
      In generally, the Ngelawang Show has same meaning and performance.
      But in this occasion the the performance is only in one point (open stage of Monkey Forest Ubud).
      Ngelawang will be held on 10th to 13th April 2017 at 4 pm to 5 pm.
      The performance is only from the local youngsters from Padangtegal community.
